Oil Cooler Install Kit, LML Duramax | 2011-2016

Duramax oil coolers have to be replaced from time to time due to deterioration and failure, and certain seals and gaskets need to be replaced along with the cooler. The Merchant Automotive Oil Cooler Install Kit includes the seals and gaskets you need to install your new or used engine oil cooler on 2011-2016 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks with the LML 6.6L Duramax diesel, and 2011-2016 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans with the LGH 6.6L Duramax. It includes the oil cooler to block seal.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Duramax Oil Cooler

The oil cooler is a vital part of your Duramax oil system, and a failure can cause serious engine damage. Watch for these symptoms:

• Oil leaking from the cooler area
• Coolant leaking from the cooler area
• Oil leaking into the cooling system
• Coolant leaking into the oil system

These symptoms can point to other problems, so it is always a good idea to test the cooler and inspect the oil system for any signs of metal or coolant. An easy way to test the oil cooler is to remove the oil filter and pressure test the cooling system.

Replace the Oil Cooler After an Engine Failure

In most cases, the engine oil cooler does not fail on its own, but replacing it is generally recommended after a catastrophic engine failure. When metal is pumped through the engine from an internal failure, it can collect in the oil cooler, and the stacked plate design can make that debris very difficult to clean out. A new cooler helps protect a new or rebuilt engine from contamination.

Installation Tips

• A good time to replace the oil cooler is during a water pump replacement, because the coolant tube can be moved much more with the pump out.
• Another good time is during a coolant flush, since all of the coolant has to be drained for this job anyway.
• Clean all sealing surfaces on the block and rear cover before installing the new cooler and gaskets.
• Replace every seal and gasket that is disturbed during the job.
• Refill the cooling system and check the oil and coolant for cross-contamination after installation.
