The Merchant Automotive Duramax Glow Plug Reamer cleans carbon and soot out of the glow plug bores before you install new glow plugs. It fits all 6.6L Duramax engines, LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, LGH and L5P, in 2001-2026 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks and 2006-2016 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans.

GM's service information explains that soot builds up between the glow plug and the bore during normal operation. If it isn't removed, it can side load a new glow plug and cause premature failure. On the L5P, the glow plugs have ceramic tips, and GM calls for reaming the bore every time a glow plug is removed (GM bulletin 23-NA-032). If a glow plug tip breaks off, it can fall into the combustion chamber, and GM directs technicians to inspect the cylinder for the tip or other debris.

When to Use

Use the reamer every time you remove a glow plug, before installing the new one. It is especially important on the L5P with ceramic glow plugs. On the DuramaxDiesels forum, one member reports reaming the bore "every time" he replaces L5P glow plugs, using the Merchant Automotive reamer, and another owner reports that the L5P's ceramic tip "likes to break when its got carbon packed around it."

Installation Tips

  • Put a small amount of grease on the flutes of the reamer to collect the carbon it removes from the bore.
  • Turn the tool by hand. You do not need a wrench or socket.
  • Inspect each glow plug you remove. If the tip is broken, check the cylinder for the tip or other debris before going further.
  • GM advises not to put grease or anti seize on the new glow plug, and not to use power tools to install it. Overtightening can crack a ceramic glow plug.
  • On the L5P, GM calls for the glow plug learn procedure after replacement.
