Block Heater Element, Duramax | 2001-2016

This genuine GM engine block heater element (GM 12657629) fits the 6.6L Duramax in 2001-2016 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks with the LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM and LML engines, and in 2006-2016 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans with the 6.6L Duramax. It warms the engine coolant when the truck is plugged in, which helps the diesel start and warm up in cold weather.

Note: This is the heater element only. The cord is sold separately as the Block Heater Cord, Duramax | 2001-2016.

Before You Order

• The cord is not included. If your cord is damaged, add the Block Heater Cord, Duramax | 2001-2016.
• This element is not thermostatically controlled.
• 2017-2019 L5P trucks use the Block Heater Element, L5P Duramax | 2017-2019.
• If the engine doesn't warm up when plugged in, check the cord and outlet first. A damaged cord can look like a failed element.

Installation Tips

• In most cases, some coolant has to be drained before the element is removed, so plan to top off or refill the cooling system afterward.
• Don't plug in the block heater until the element is installed and the cooling system is full. Running it dry can damage it.

If the engine stays cold after being plugged in for several hours and the cord and outlet are working, the element is the likely cause. Check before ordering.

Do I need to drain coolant to replace it?
In most cases, yes. Some coolant has to be drained before the element comes out.
