The Merchant Automotive Oil Syphon Pump is designed to work with the Merchant Automotive Fluid Analysis and Coolant Analysis kits, making it easy to draw a sample without draining. Using the Syphon Pump and the included polyurethane tubing, you can draw a sample from a dipstick tube, fill plug opening or coolant reservoir cap. Lubricating fluids and coolant are the lifeblood of any engine-powered machine. Engines, transmissions, gearboxes, transfer cases, differentials and hydraulic systems all rely on proper lubrication and cooling to reach MAximum service life.
NOTE: For the most accurate test results and to avoid cross-contamination from previous samples, use a new length of tubing for each sample draw. The poly tubing can be cut with a razor blade or tubing cutter. Be careful not to crush, pinch or kink the tubing when cutting or using it, as that can cause a poor seal and make it difficult to draw a sample.

Why Test Your Fluids?
Changing fluids at the general recommended service intervals works for most applications, but it can mean waste, extra expense and added load on the environment when expensive oils and fluids are replaced before their service life is over. On the other hand, waiting too long to change the oil, fluid or coolant can lead to extensive damage and very costly repairs once the fluid breaks down and can no longer protect, lubricate and cool the moving parts in your engine, transmission, gearbox, transfer case, differential or hydraulic system. With proper fluid analysis, it's easier to spot and isolate problems while they're small and less costly to repair.
The old-school recommendation of changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles is a perfect example of premature fluid replacement in most cases. That rule was developed decades ago, largely as an incentive by oil companies and lube shops to sell more oil and service. It may have made sense when lower-quality oils and simpler engine designs were common, but with modern oils and lubricants (especially high-performance synthetics), drain intervals can exceed 10,000 miles on modern, highly engineered engines, and much longer for transmission and gear oils that don't have combustion byproducts to contend with.
So how do you know if you're changing your fluids too early and wasting money, or too late and hurting your vehicle? That's where precision fluid analysis comes in. Merchant Automotive has teamed with the experts at Apex Oil Lab and their state-of-the-art testing facility to offer scientific fluid testing, evaluation and diagnosis, with specific attention to automotive lubrication and cooling, that's typically reserved for large fleet operators. Now it's available to individual customers.
Lab testing measures up to 32 different elements to identify wear metals suspended in the fluid, as well as contaminants, additives, fuel dilution and more, to determine the internal health of the engine, transmission, gearbox, transfer case, differential, hydraulic system or cooling system the sample came from. Detailed analysis can reveal problems as they first develop, so they can be corrected before they become catastrophic. It can also help you find the best maintenance interval for your vehicle and driving habits, so you get the most service life out of your fluids and your vehicle. Results come in an easy-to-read format that clearly outlines the findings, with warnings for elevated or potentially dangerous readings that need attention.
One analysis kit is required for each fluid sample, so order a few to use later or to test multiple fluids in your vehicle at one time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Oil Syphon Pump for other automotive fluids, or is it just for oil?
Despite the name, the Merchant Automotive Oil Syphon Pump can be used to draw samples of all automotive fluids for testing and analysis. Note that Apex Oil Lab does not test brake fluid or power steering fluid.
Will USPS mail my sample since it contains oil?
In our experience, yes, USPS will handle mailing oil samples. Make sure the sample bottle and shipping container are both securely closed, and that the information form is inside the shipping container with the sample bottle.
How do I get my analysis results?
The fluid analysis results will be emailed to the address you provide on the enclosed analysis form.
How long does the analysis take?
Oil test results are typically given within one business day after the lab receives the sample, and often the same day if the oil sample is received by 11:00 a.m. Eastern. Coolant test results can take up to two weeks, depending on when the sample arrives relative to the lab's coolant testing cycle. Mail delivery time to the lab varies.
Can I test both my engine oil and transmission fluid with the same test kit?
You can send in multiple samples from the same vehicle at the same time, but each sample requires its own container. Mixing samples will not give usable results for either component.
